I changed the bricks so they are smaller, I added more shadows to the figure and tried to make the brick look farther back with color change and shadow.
After Effects and The Velvet Revolution Response
I thought it was really interesting how Manovich did not jump right into explaining the complex structure of After Effects and what goes in to media remixability. Instead, he led with how long it has taken for the public to recognize hybrid media as the new norm. I personally had never even heard of After Effects before this class, nor had I thought about what goes into making software like that. I think that people not knowing can be attributed, as Manovich says, to the fact that before this type of affordable software was created, moving image media was not accessible to a lot of people. He describes how at his first job, the process of making computer animation required locating magnetic tapes and putting it on the tape drive and then searching for the part of the tape you needed. No one looking to recreationally create digital animation would ever go through this process, and almost no one (including Manovich’s company) could afford the alternative. Thus, the evolution of hybrid media was not well known to the public. On the contrary, people knew about other computer revolutions, such as the World Wide Web and special effects in movies, because they were more in your face and more present in everyday life. The fact that After Effects was the first real software that made computer animation more of a publicly considered and used thing makes sense; no one was seeking out computer animation when it was inaccessible, timely and unaffordable. But, when it became easier to use and more applicable to people’s lives, hybrid media use was acknowledged and credited for how advanced it really was.
I also found it very cool that within the software environment, cinematography, animation, computer animation, special effects, graphic design and typography combined to form a new “metamedium.” This to me is a reflection of how things develop over time. This metamedium is not a new invention of the time, but it combines all the elements of software that were new and modern at one time and combines them to form a more technologically advanced system. This reminded me of forming a band; if you combine a great drummer, singer, guitarist and piano player, you are bound to have a great band. While nothing new was invented, I consider it a more refreshing creation, because it is a way to utilize resources to create something more accessible and detailed.
Overall I think this article brought up a lot of key points that non-computer animation workers would not ever think about. I never would have even considered that After Effects took multiple forms of software and animation elements to make a hybrid media. I also never would have known that this went unnoticed until a more accessible and affordable application was invented to utilize this hybrid media. Lastly, I think the combination of the aspects within the software environment was a resourceful invention that is innovative without being too new and complex; rather than scratch what already exists and make a completely new template for computer animation, these programs take the software that already exists and combines it into one comprehensive program.
Final Project
For our augmented reality, my partner and I wanted to take the class through a day in the building where we spend each class. With each room we enter in our project, there is a different art student or scene that outlines the thought processes and or the feelings of these students as they do their various art works. Our project started with a scene of an artist making a piece with a song stuck in her head and her thoughts on the piece floating in a thought bubble. We then moved to a locker, where a hand opens the locker and an image appears. We then move to a classroom with a cabinet and the voice of a teacher explaining a painting that appears on the projector screen. Our final scene is an exit sign, and over the exit sign is music and illuminating lights and images. My two parts in particular show what might influence an art student, as you see in the scene with the artist working with the song "In the Jungle" stuck in her head, and a thought bubble of her painting over her head. This scene represents how an artists' work can be influenced and even shifted because of her thoughts and random habits. My second scene is a bit darker. In the classroom, there are no students, but there is the voice of a teacher in the background, ominously explaining her work to no one. While she is not seen in the film, it is a testament to how passionate artists are about their work, even if no one is there to listen. It also shows that teaching or explaining one's art can be incredibly challenging, and it is easier to do when no one is there. Overall, this project was supposed to show the inner thoughts and feelings of artists in this building.
This was the image I started with for the first scene of my augmented reality project. It is a photoshopped image of an elephant (a picture I took) in the mountains and water. This was the inspiration for the song playing in my head in our first scene.
This video is what appeared over the trigger image of the elephant. It is a mix of photoshop and after effects with music added this.
This is a painting that my grandmother did, and it is the painting that appears over the video of the projector in the classroom scene. I used keyframes for the image to fade in when the camera went over the projector.
This thought bubble lingered over my head using position keyframes in after effects. I made this through photoshop, with the pen tool.
This is the video that was an overlay over the image of the cabinet in the classroom. It depicts an empty class, to show that students have mentally checked out despite the professor talking. I made the video in after effects and added the voiceover to create the overlay.
